Quantification of burned areas by means of remote sensing

The activities related to the present grant will be devoted to implement an automatic procedure for the characterization of the burned area, performed on large areas making use ofhigh resolution (20-30 m) optical satellite data and possibly by making use of SAR data too in particular cases. In particular, a code for the automatic and periodical download of updated data will be implemented, as well as a code for the calculation of the relevant spectral indexes. A thresholded result will be provided that will be easily understood also from people outside the reseacrh context. The result will exclude the areas covered byu the clouds and will be focused on an area to be identified within the Calabria region. We will enclose in the final product also a cloud masking algorithm.
