Offer Description
Job position
PhD candidate (2023DILIFRUA94)
The Department of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) invites applications for a PhD candidate to join the ERC-funded research project DEMOTRADEOFF “Reconciling Citizens with the Trade-offs of Democracy: Attitudes Toward Democracy Under Rising Politicization.”
The project is led by Professor Enrique Hernández and it runs from 2022 to 2027. The project will be part of the Political Science Department research group on Democracy, Elections and Citizenship (DEC).
The DEMOTRADEOFF project
DEMOTRADEOFF aims to study democratic trade-offs and how these might fuel political discontent.
Democracies involve trade-offs since all their desirable qualities cannot be simultaneously maximized. Hard choices must be made to balance principles such as popular sovereignty and the rule of law, or freedom and political equality. However, we still know little about the positions of citizens and parties regarding democratic trade-offs; how these contribute to citizens’ increasing discontent with democracy; or how the rising politicization of the trade-offs of democracy might exacerbate these dynamics. DEMOTRADEOFF examines these questions through a combination of cross-sectional and panel surveys, content analysis, and experiments.
Further information about the project can be found here.
