Lions Eye Institute (Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science)

  • Position will be located at the Lions Eye Institute (LEI) in Nedlands. LEI is a leading eye research institute in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • 2 full-time positions available on a 5-year fixed term basis
  • Level C, Base salary range: $132,381 – $152,279 p.a. (pro-rata) plus 17% superannuation

About the team

The Lion’s Eye Institute is building its research capacity for the future and wishes to embed people with energy and vison to help expand achievements in its priority research areas:

  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic and Vascular Retinopathies
  • Indigenous and Community Eye Health
  • Genetic Eye Disease, Gene Therapies and Macular Degeneration
  • Cornea, Ocular Surface and Ocular Immunology
  • Myopia

LEI research applies skilled research techniques to understand and tackle eye disease with a strong translational research capability working with clinicians and our clinical trials team. Applicants do not need prior eye research skills. We are interested in scientists who have and wish to further develop advanced experimental skills and methods, which can be used to understand or address eye disease.

About the opportunity

The Lion’s Eye Institute and UWA Medical School are jointly seeking two energetic postdoctoral researchers to further the LEI mission to prevent and cure blindness and eye disease. You will work with the brightest minds in clinical services and research to improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment.

You will be responsible for achieving significant research funding to contribute to building LEI future achievements and translational research to reduce eye disease. You will need to collaborate internally and externally to create a recognised and successful research hub in one of the priority areas. You will have the opportunity and be expected to collaborate with clinician researchers, forming the scientific backbone of a strong collaborative team.

You will also actively supervise and mentor higher degree students, participate in education/research leadership for public engagements and represent the University at external activities.

About you 

To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline or other relevant higher professional qualifications
  • A strong track record in excellence in research at a national level evidenced by a series of peer-reviewed journal articles published in high quality journals.    
  • A track record of successful competitive funding application  
  • Evidence of successful supervision of HDR students    
  • Experience of leading public engagement activities that promote research and/or education outcomes, government and industry. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Skill Sets

The area of work will benefit from skills sets in some or more of the following:

  • Two photon or advanced confocal or other live microscopic, neural, tissue and vascular imaging.
  • Advanced optics/imaging techniques for human retinal imaging.
  • Biomaterial fabrication for small therapeutic device development. 
  • Proteomics and validation of biomarkers for health and altered disease states
  • Blood flow and haemodynamics of microcirculation.
  • Tissue pressures and force effects within and upon tissues.
  • Neurovascular coupling.
  • Neurovascular and immune mediated effects
  • Psychophysics/sensory neural physiology involving neural pathway transmission.
  • Bioinformatics and large data handling
  • Population health, especially related to 1st Nations peoples and or vulnerable populations.
  • Stem cell culture, allied with genetic manipulation related to neural and/or epithelial cell.
  • Cell biology - propagation of primary human corneal endothelial cells, use of flow cytometry, immunofluorescence and gene expression analysis
  • Ultrawide field OCT and OCTA development for clinical use
  • New adaptive optics imaging systems with ultrahigh resolution
