Offer Description
Post-doc position available in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS within National Science
Center (NSC) OPUS 26 Project no. 2023/51/B/ST7/01204 entitled “Two-dimensional boron nitride: a
game-changer for ultrafast lasers in portable applications?”
(leader dr hab. Mariusz Klimczak, prof. UW/ dr hab. Yuriy Stepanenko, prof. IChF)
(2D BN) and the potential of this material for use in mode-locking techniques and the generation of
ultrashort laser pulses in integrated devices. The studies will cover key phenomena and parameters
of nonlinear optics and UV luminescence in 2D BN, such as nonlinear absorption, gain bandwidth,
and fluorescence lifetimes. The Project comprises two parallel work packages: the first focuses on
the growth and characterization of 2D BN heterostructures, while the second concentrates on
nonlinear optics research and mode-locked cavities.
The Project will be conducted over 48 months by two research teams: the Layered Materials
Laboratory of the University of Warsaw (Faculty of Physics) and the Laser Center Group of the
Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). Expected outcomes include the
development of new growth protocols for 2D BN heterostructures with enhanced nonlinear
properties and well-defined UV luminescence characteristics, which would unlock new directions in
the field of ultrafast integrated lasers, with potential future applications in e.g. nonlinear imaging.
The successful candidate will be joining inter-institution research team focused on delivering twodimensional
boron nitride heterostructures (2D BN) for small form-factor ultrafast lasers. The
candidate will be expected to spearhead efforts in versatile characterization of nonlinear response of
2D BN developed in different technological approaches. The parameter space of interest
encompasses among others nonlinear.

Ability to work independently as well as in a group;
Achievements in instruments development and construction (laser cavities, nonlinear and ultrafast
optics characterization) are welcomed and expected;
Familiarity with a computational or programming language (e.g. matlab, python, lab view) will be
considered an advantage;
Ability to communicate fluently in English (written and spoken);
Strong motivation to work and pursue scientific questions with creativity, unconstrained creativity
and analytical thinking;

Additional Information
We offer a post-doctoral position (full-time employment) in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS
with a gross salary of Around 9.650,00 PLN gross
per month financed from the NCN OPUS 26 Project no. 2023/51/B/ST7/01204 entitled “Twodimensional
boron nitride: a game-changer for ultrafast lasers in portable applications?”
100% of the work time of Postdoc will be devoted to the realization of the proposed project. The
offer is for 6 months with a possible extension up 45 months
The successful candidate will benefit in the form of new knowledge and methods. The Project deals
with advanced methods in nonlinear and ultrafast optics experimentation as well as in the technology
and characterization of unique two-dimensional van der Walls crystalline materials – with direct access
to both the required experimentation apparatus and the technological facilities. For this reason wide
range of candidate profiles are expected to benefit from gaining new knowledge skills during the
Project’s implementation.
The results of the research will be submitted to high impact factor journals, and the Project funding is
also secured for covering the cost of participation at international conferences for communicating
the results.
The successful candidate will be eligible for all programs at the IPC PAS, including the IPC PAS Young
Scientists competition and the IPC PAS Young Scientists Mobility competition.
Institute provides an opportunity to participate in ERASMUS+ programme.
The successful candidate for the postdoctoral position shall, for the full term of their
employment within the project, be obligated to maintain compliance with the following
conditions:
their PhD degree has been awarded by another institution than the one planned to employ
them at this post or they have completed a continuous and evidenced post-doctoral
fellowship of at least 10 months in another institution than the host institution for the
project and in another country than the one in which they have been conferred a PhD degree
they did not have the principal investigator as their research supervisor or auxiliary
supervisor of their PhD dissertation.;
at the time of receiving remuneration, they will not be receiving any other remuneration paid
from the funds granted to research projects under NCN calls under the heading of direct
costs;
in the period of receiving the remuneration they will be receiving no remuneration from
another employer pursuant to an employment contract, including an employer with
registered office outside of Poland.
A post-doc type post is a full-time post, scheduled by the project’s principal investigator
