PhD position
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is allocated in the framework of a Marie Skłodowska Curie Action (MSCA) Doctoral Network “NUCLEAR” funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe framework program. NUCLEAR brings together European leaders in the fields of metabolomics, functional genomics, chromatin regulation, stem cell biology, and cancer with innovators in precision nutrition, mass spectrometry technologies, and drug development. Together, the network will train 16 doctoral candidates in the emerging field of Metabolic Regulation of Genome Function and Cell Identity, relevant for stem cell biology and cancer. The position will be within the Molecular Signaling and Bioenergetics group headed by Prof. Mathias Ziegler.
About the project/work tasks:
- To establish technologies for the measurement and modulation of nuclear NAD levels and turnover using pharmacological and genetic approaches. This will include LC-MS quantification
- To develop and implement techniques to determine nuclear NAD turnover using stable isotope labeling and mass spectrometry
- To establish the impact of altered nuclear NAD availability on nuclear processes, and the extent of their NAD demand
Qualifications and personal qualities:
The applicant must hold a master's degree or equivalent in the field of Biochemistry, Biotechnology or Chemistry. If the master thesis has not been finally evaluated, and the degree not yet awarded at the time of application, a written statement from the supervisor is required confirming that the thesis has been submitted.
- Practical experience in cell biology, molecular biology including mammalian cell culture is required
- Documented knowledge in bioinformatics and programming (Python, R) is required
- Experience in LC-MS and mass spectrometry is required
- Experience from relevant research projects investigating subcellular metabolism and signaling will be an advantage
- The candidate should demonstrate the ability to work independently and in a structured manner, while also being capable of effective collaboration with others
- The applicant must exhibit both the ability and motivation to undertake a PhD project

Organized research training (PhD program):
The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position. Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.
The PhD-position:
PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
