Offer Description
The project aims to present a new analysis of the functioning of the late Roman Empire on its peripheries. The project will examine issues related to the management of provinces, the effectiveness of communication between the imperial court in Constantinople and provincial capitals, and the actual enforcement of imperial laws in distant regions. The team's research will focus on three exceptionally well-documented provincial capitals – Antinoopolis, Ravenna and Petra – but will also cover similar cities across the Mediterranean basin. This comparative approach aims to recreate the complex model of justice and law enforcement in the late Roman Empire, thereby contributing to a broader understanding of state institutions in late antiquity.
