DESCRIPTION: (topics, expectations, comments):

Job Description.

The candidate will join the group carrying out the NCN MAESTRO-15 project No. UMO 2023/50/A/ST10/00046 entitled "At the crossroads: continental connection with the Bunger Hills, East Antarctica". The planned research includes, among others:

  1. Fieldwork;
  2. Preparation of samples for paleomagnetic analysis – embedding in gypsum, drilling, and cutting samples;
  3. Demagnetization of samples using thermal and alternating field (AF) methods; conducting rock-magnetic experiments aimed at determining the maximum unblocking temperatures and coercivity spectra of ferromagnetic minerals, identification of ferromagnetic minerals using optical and SEM methods, measurements of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of the samples;
  4. Conducting petrological and mineralogical analyses of igneous and metamorphic rocks;
  5. Separation of mineral grains for geochronological analyses;
  6. Data interpretation, including fold tests, preparation of tectonic and paleogeographic reconstructions (in collaboration with the project research team);
  7. Preparation of scientific articles and conference presentations.

Title of NCN competition

MAESTRO-15

Requirements

  1. PhD degree in Earth Sciences or a related field;
  2. Knowledge of research topics related to paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic analyses;
  3. Knowledge of research topics related to the petrology, mineralogy, and geochronology of igneous and metamorphic rocks;
  4. Experience in fieldwork and laboratory work;
  5. Experience in interpreting large datasets;
  6. Excellent communication in English, including presenting research results at international conferences, reading and writing scientific articles;
  7. Outstanding scientific achievements;
  8. Motivation for scientific research.

* In accordance with NCN requirements, only a person who has obtained a doctoral degree from an entity other than the one where the position is planned to be filled no earlier than 7 years prior to the year of employment in the project may be accepted for a post-doc position. This period may be extended by the time of being on long-term (more than 90 days) documented sickness benefits or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work during this period. In addition, the number of months spent on leave for the care and upbringing of children granted under the terms of the Labour Code may be added to this period, and in the case of women - 18 months for each child born or adopted.

Additional information

The project is financed within the framework of the NCN MAESTRO-15 project No. UMO 2023/50/A/ST10/00046 entitled "At the crossroads: continental connection with the Bunger Hills, East Antarctica". The duration of the project is planned for 36 months.

This project involves geochemistry and geophysics applied to geological relationships within three continents: Eastern Antarctica, Western Australia and Peninsular India. The aim of the project will be achieved by testing three competing scientific hypotheses: whether the Bunger Hills was associated with 1) the Yilgarn Craton and Albany Fraser Orogen (Australo-Antarctic continent); 2) the Mawson Craton (Australo-Antarctic continent) or 3) the Indo-Antarctic continent, which may also be related to the Pinjarra Orogen in Western Australia.

To discriminate between these hypotheses, expeditions will be mounted to Antarctica, SW Australia and eastern India to map the geology and collect samples. This will form the basis for an integrated analytical program involving research partners in several countries to provide world-class data. Interpretations and regional correlations will be underpinned by geophysical mapping and analysis.

The work will be carried out under the supervision of:

DR. HAB. KRZYSZTOF MICHALSKI, krzysztof.michalski@igf.edu.pl,

Institute of Geophysics PAS, ul. Księcia Janusza 64, 01-452 Warszawa.

Required documents:

  • CV;
  • Document confirming obtaining a doctoral degree;
  • Cover letter;
  • Information on scientific achievements (including a list of publications), awards and scientific internships;
  • Electronic version of the most important publication (or typescripts of unpublished works) that the candidate considers representative of his/her scientific achievements;
  • Two letters of recommendation;
  • Other relevant documents (at the candidate's discretion).

Applications for the Competition should be sent by 30.06.2026   to: kariera@igf.edu.pl writing the subject of the message: "MAESTRO-15 Assistant Professor".

Selected candidates may be invited for an interview via electronic means of audio and video communication.
