Full-time Post-Doctoral position available in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS within National Science Center (NSC) OPUS 17 Project No. UMO- 2019/33/B/ST4/01443 entitled “FAST CHEMICAL REACTIONS IN GELS” (leader dr hab. Gonzalo Angulo).
Job Description:
The aim of the project is to study photo-induced chemical reactions, with especial emphasis on electron transfer, in hydro-gels. Over the last years our group has advanced in the understanding of photo-induced bimolecular reactions in condensed media. Our major contributions range from the resolution of long lasting questions related to the physical description of chemical reactions to the possibility to speed up them using multi-pulse light excitation. We have expanded from simple liquids to ionic liquids, liquid crystals, and crowded environments mimicking the cell cytoplasm. To this aim we employ a variety of photo-physical techniques ranging from stationary measurements to sub-picosecond time resolved fluorescence –up-conversion and transient absorption. Within this project we plan to build two combined set-ups that should allow us to expand the time over which the kinetics are recorded from 2 ns in both cases to 25 ns in the former and 1 microsecond in the latter. The main tasks of the candidate will be related to the construction of these experiments and performing measurements with them.

Benefits

We offer a post-doctoral position (full-time employment) in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS with gross salary in the amount of around 8300 PLN per month financed from the NSC OPUS 17 Project No. 2019/33/B/ST4/01443.
The position is for 12 months to start no later than October 1st 2020, with the possibility to be extended up to 36 months total. The Institute offers contribution towards private health insurance.

The successful candidate will be part of a highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team. He/She will have the possibility to broaden his/her knowledge and gain hands-on experience at the border between physics and chemistry. Funds are allocated to cover participation in international conferences and for short visits in collaborating laboratories. Institute provides opportunity to participate in ERASMUS + programme.

Eligibility criteria

PhD in chemistry, physics or related fields awarded not earlier than seven years before the year of engagement in the project. This period can be extended by the duration of maternity/paternity leaves (according to NSC rules). Note: candidates who do not have a doctoral degree can enter the competition, but when signing the employment contract must hold the title. The candidate cannot have had contractual relationship with IChF for the previous two years to the start of the contract.

Selection process

Complete application should include the following items:
• Scientific curriculum vitae, including a list of scientific achievements (scholarships, publications, conference presentations, etc.),
• PhD diploma in English,
• Motivation letter (max. 3500 characters),
• At least one recommendation letter written by an independent researcher.
The best candidates who meet the competition requirements will be invited for an interview (or a conference-call). The interviews will take place from June 16th, 2020 to June 30th, 2020. Good command of English is required.

The competition will be held in line with the competition documentation of the National Science Center (NSC) for the OPUS 17.
The incomplete applications may be rejected without further evaluation;
The Commission will take into account the following criteria:
a) competences of candidates for specific tasks in a research project,
b) previous scientific achievements of candidates,
The commission evaluates applications on a point scale.
Employed will be the person who obtains the highest number of points.
If the top candidate does not sign the contract, due to the resignation, we reserve the right to choose the next candidate from the ranking list.
The results of the recruitment will be announced on July 15th, 2020.
The results of the competition are made public.

Specific Requirements

Experience in building optical systems with femtosecond lasers. Knowledge of programming in Labview or equivalent. Creativity measured by the quality and number of projects, study record, internships, postdoctoral stays, authorship in peer-reviewed publications in which the Candidate participated and contributed. Experience in photochemistry and/or photophysics.
