Outline
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities either as a (non-degree) student or a regular student seeking a degree under the Monbukagakusho Scholarship Program.
Applications can only be accepted through Japanese embassies in the country of origin.
What is funded
Candidates for Master’s or Doctorate courses can apply for fellowships covering travel expenses and monthly stipend for an 18-month period (if arrival in Japan in October 2017), 24-month period (arrival in April 2017), of for the whole duration of their course.

Eligibility
Foreign applicants of any nationality (within the list of countries holding diplomatic relations with Japan), born after April 1982 [for the 2016 call] and meeting the relevant academic background conditions are eligible.
